The Basic Concepts Foundation (BCF) was established to improve school readiness and academic performance among learners in the Foundation Phase (Grade R to Grade 3) in South Africa. We do this by helping children develop essential language concepts and cognitive skills. Our approach starts from the ground up – we work closely with teachers and support them throughout the process. At the same time, we work from the top down, through the Department of Education, to drive broader, system-wide progress in literacy and numeracy. Introducing these core concepts early on sets children up for success throughout their school journey.
