The National Reading Barometer: Mapping South Africa’s Reading Landscape

November 22, 2024

Reading is the key to unlocking opportunities, yet many South Africans—children and adults alike—struggle to cultivate this essential skill. The National Reading Barometer provides a comprehensive snapshot of the state of reading in South Africa, combining insights from the 2023 National Reading Survey with existing data to understand the enablers and barriers to reading.

The Barometer serves as a critical tool for anyone invested in transforming South Africa’s reading culture. By offering a holistic view of the country’s reading ecosystem, it enables:

  • Insightful Analysis
It maps reading habits, attitudes, and access across communities, identifying disparities and opportunities for growth.
  • Holistic Perspectives
Covering both child and adult reading, the Barometer highlights the interconnectedness of family, community, and educational environments in fostering a culture of reading.
  • Actionable Data
The report synthesises findings into actionable insights, sparking meaningful debate and collaboration among policymakers, educators, and civil society.

For the younger generation, reading is a gateway to critical thinking, creativity, and success in education. The Barometer highlights key factors influencing children’s reading, such as:

  • Access to age-appropriate and engaging reading materials.
  • Supportive home environments where parents and caregivers model positive reading behaviours.
  • Well-resourced schools and libraries to nurture early literacy skills.

One of the Barometer’s primary goals is to foster collaboration across sectors. It invites all stakeholders—parents, educators, non-profits, and government—to come together around shared priorities for improving reading outcomes. By doing so, it aligns with the Hold My Hand campaign’s emphasis on collective responsibility for children’s well-being and development.

The National Reading Barometer is more than a report—it’s a call to action. Let’s use its insights to debate, decide, and act together to create a thriving reading culture in South Africa.

Let’s hold hands and turn the page towards a brighter future for all.
