Tackling the Hidden Threat of Unhealthy Food Advertising Around Schools

January 6, 2025

Did you know that children are exposed to an overwhelming number of unhealthy food advertisements and outlets on their daily journeys to school? A recent study highlights a worrying trend in South African cities: most food advertisements and outlets near schools promote unhealthy options like sugary drinks, deep-fried snacks, and high-sodium processed foods. These environments influence children’s food choices and health outcomes in ways we cannot ignore.

The findings are clear—children’s health is shaped not just by what’s on their plates, but by the spaces they navigate daily. Informal traders and small businesses often sell affordable but nutrient-poor foods, reflecting a broader socio-economic challenge. At the same time, "big food" advertisements strategically target children through bright packaging and prime placements.

The Hold My Hand campaign is committed to championing policies that protect children from these harmful environments. By working with communities, schools, and policymakers, we aim to create food environments that support healthy choices. But we need everyone to join the movement—parents, caregivers, and educators—to amplify the call for change.
