On 1 December, World AIDS Day 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) spotlighted the theme “Take the rights path: My health, my right!” to rally global leaders and communities toward ending AIDS as a public health threat by 2030. Rooted in a commitment to human rights, this year’s focus extends to addressing inequalities and championing gender-based violence (GBV) prevention, particularly during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The "Hold My Hand" campaign aligns with this vision, advocating for children and teens who live at the crossroads of potential and vulnerability in South Africa. Poverty, HIV exposure, and violence remain critical challenges, demanding bold, collaborative solutions.
This year’s WHO call also includes urgent reminders for flu and COVID-19 vaccinations and combating iron deficiency. Together, these efforts aim to safeguard health, reduce inequalities, and protect communities worldwide.
As South Africa mobilises under the “Hold My Hand” campaign banner, its priorities echo the WHO's call for action: protecting the rights and well-being of children and adolescents, ending violence, and ensuring access to life-saving care.
